Sparkling, sashimi and Chat GPT

I tasted the Gala Estate 2018 Sparkling Rosé when the weather was far nicer than it is right now and the first thing that leapt into my head was pink grapefruit sashimi. Which is interesting as I’m allergic to nearly all fish products.

This is where ChatGPT comes in. I’m a big fan of the idea that AI shouldn’t be about taking away the creativity of humans, AI should pick up the slack on the drudgery side of things. However, my Gen X self has been getting into it and realised that I can put in the things that my mind throws at me, and turn it into a solid recipe. Often I see a dish when I taste a wine and it takes a little bit of time to work out all the different components but I kind of liked that Chat GPT gave me a recipe. I’ve added it below and I would love someone to try the combo of sashimi and bubbles on a sunny day at, or near to the beach. In my head, this involves summery and frivolous outfits and music that makes. you want to wiggle it, just a little bit.

The recipe:

Sashimi with Pink Grapefruit

Ingredients:

  • Fresh sashimi-grade fish (like tuna, salmon, or yellowtail)

  • Pink grapefruit (peeled and segmented)

  • Cucumber (sliced thinly)

  • Avocado (sliced)

  • Red onion (thinly sliced, optional)

  • Soy sauce

  • Wasabi

  • Pickled ginger

  • Sesame seeds (toasted)

  • Microgreens or cilantro (for garnish)

  • Sea salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sashimi:

    • Slice the sashimi-grade fish into thin, bite-sized pieces. Arrange them neatly on a plate.

  2. Prepare the Grapefruit:

    • Carefully segment the pink grapefruit, removing any pith or membrane. You want to keep the segments whole if possible, for a burst of flavor.

  3. Assemble the Dish:

    • Arrange the grapefruit segments around the sashimi. You can also scatter thin cucumber slices and avocado slices around for added texture and flavor.

    • Add a few thin slices of red onion if you like a bit of sharpness.

  4. Garnish and Season:

    • Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the top.

    • Garnish with microgreens or a few cilantro leaves.

    • If desired, a light sprinkle of sea salt can enhance the flavors.

  5. Serve:

    • Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.

The acidity of the pink grapefruit will cut through the richness of the sashimi, while the sweet notes will complement the natural flavors of the fish. Enjoy!
